Introduction from the Department of Psychology:

Welcome to the Department of Psychology, University of Malta. We are a varied group of psychologists, from the clinical, counselling, educational, social, organisational, health, work and research settings, with psychology training in different countries from Europe, Australia and North America. We try to make use of our varied expertise to offer our students opportunities for both personal growth as well as wide-based basic knowledge and skills in the different fields of psychological science and practice.

The Department of Psychology offers varied services. Our main commitment is to the training of psychologists. Our course structure is similar to that being proposed by the European Federation of Psychologist Associations: a 3-year Bpsy Honours first degree in Psychology, followed by a 2-year Masters professional training in one of the major areas of psychology. About 90 students join the BPsy course every year, though our M. Psy programme is limited to only 9-12 students.

The B. Psy. Honours course is a three year full-time programme which aims at:

Giving students a broad introduction to the area of psychology; providing opportunities for personal growth and supervised contact with others in a helping environment; grounding in research and the opportunity to conduct an independent research project through a dissertation; some application of psychological theory to life situations.

The M.Psy course is projected to be offered every two years in the areas of clinical, counselling and educational psychology. It is a two year full-time programme consisting of coursework, practica, and research. Entry into the course is limited because of the limited amount of practical placements available. Owing to the fact that placements are conducted in the Maltese language, candidates need to be fluent in Maltese.

For more information contact secretaries: Ms. Priscilla Grima, and Ms. Ruth Zammit.
